I scream, You Scream, We All Love Some Ice Cream!

Summertime is the perfect season to celebrate Frederick County’s rich agricultural heritage by enjoying some cold, refreshing ice cream! The county has two dairy farms that offer fresh, delicious on-farm ice cream for anyone up to this tasty challenge!

South Mountain Creamery was the very first of Maryland’s dairy farms with an on-site dairy processing plant. While visiting the farm you can try the more than two dozen flavors available, including the less common varieties such as Bubble Gum, Lemon Meringue, Monkey Butter, Orange Pineapple, and more. South Mountain Creamery ice cream is available at the farm store or for home delivery. And while you’re at the farm, enjoy several free daily activities. Watch the cows being milked daily from 1:30-5:00pm, help bottle-feed the calves at 4:00 pm, or enjoy some fun on the play set or rock pile. In addition to ice cream, South Mountain Creamery offers glass-bottled milk and other dairy products, cheese, yogurt, meats, breads, and dog treats. South Mountain Creamery is located at 8305 Bolivar Road in Middletown.

Rocky Point Creamery in Tuscarora sells pints and quarts of its homemade ice cream to go, or you can select from an elaborate array of ice cream sundaes, banana splits, milkshakes and malts, sorbets, and soft-serve ice cream on-site. Unique flavors like Wedding Cake, Banana Puddin’, Peppermint Chip, Salted Caramel Pretzel, and Strawberries n Cream will tempt your palate. Ice cream sandwiches, pies, and cakes are available for special order. Rocky Point Creamery is located at 4323 Tuscarora Road in Tuscarora.

If you consider yourself to be an ice cream connoisseur, be sure to check out Maryland’s Ice Cream Trail Passport. The trail features farm creameries throughout the state that are dedicated to producing nutritious and great-tasting milk and dairy foods for all to enjoy. Just answer a dairy trivia question and collect a passport stamp at each stop. All completed passports received by September 23, 2015, will be submitted into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the creamery of your choice. What’s not to love about that?!
